Filesystems

Most of the user filesystems use eight drives in a 7+1 RAID5 configuration on the RAID controller system which has eight trays of drives. This provides a filesystem of 1.6TB and also, by using one drive from each expansion tray, it is resilient against hardware failure of a complete tray. Filesystems are then generally configured as hierarchical storage systems meaning that, once the disks are full, data is migrated automatically to tape providing additional capacity. This is explained further in the software section.
